Porto Ercole – a food lover’s paradise

Set out below is a gastronomic tour of the best places to eat and drink in Porto Ercole, Monte Argentario. Also there are suggestions highlighting some of the best food shops in town.

Shopping for the freshest, locally caught fish

Typically, you eat fish in Porto Ercole – and very, fresh, very good fish too. Anchovies (acciughe or alici) and other oily fish such as mackerel (sgombro) and bonito (palamita) abound. Old favourites such as sea bream (orata) and sea bass (spigole) are plentiful too. Shellfish, scampi, crabs, octopus and prawns are excellent and tend to be either grilled or added to exotic pastas. Wonderful fresh fish can be bought from the family-run Pescheria Da Ledo (Lungomare Strozzi 3, Porto Ercole), they have their own fishing boat so their selection of fish happens to be what they caught that day.

If you prefer to eat out, Il Gambero Rosso, at the far end of the harbour is one of the best places to eat fresh fish in Porto Ercole surpassed only by the nearby Michelin starred Il Pellicano hotel.

Best place to buy meat and other delicacies in Porto Ercole

Undoubtedly the best delicatessen goes by the slightly surprising name of Marcelleria (butcher) Navoni (Via Italia 13, Porto Ercole). Everything is organic, as local as possible and of wonderful quality. It’s also the only butcher I know that sells everything from top wines (many local and natural), farm fresh pot set yogurt and artisan chocolate.

Bakery: Il Forno del Porto

Il Forno del Porto (via della Marina 16, Porto Ercole) is excellent for bread, pastries and biscuits including their famous ricotta, rum and chocolate crostata.

Porto Ercole’s best watering holes

Two bars stand out as the best places to have a drink/apperitivo in Porto Ercole – Bar del Porto and Baretto. The former started life as a cave in the 1950s, where fishermen repaired their nets. Over the years it went through a number of iterations becoming an elegant bar and a symbol of the “Golden Years of Porto Ercole”.

Baretto, on the other, is more a cocktail bar and a great place to view the world go by.
