Monte Argentario

Located in the Maremma area of southern Tuscany, Monte Argentario is an easy two-hour drive up the coast from Rome, or two hours and a bit south from Pisa. From a distance, Monte Argentario is a big rock – a wild and lush mountain peninsula promontory connected to the mainland by two causeways surrounded by large sandbars and lagoons. Thanks to its not-so-obvious location, Monte Argentario is both exclusive and rustic, the ideal location for exploring La Dolce Vita.

The gateway to Monte Argentario is Orbetello, a small walled town built into the lagoons between the mainland and the promontory. The pedestrian town is charming and has some of the best sunset views.

Porto Santo Stefano is one of Monte Argentario’s two port towns. Colourful houses are built into the terraced cove and surround the 16th century Spanish Fort.

Porto Ercole is a favourite of our guests, a charming picturesque fishing village, and home to many of our villas.

Bar del Porto is Porto Ercole’s favourite spot for a breakfast cappuccino and a quick read of the daily La Repubblica as well as an evening Negroni or favourite aperitivo. The bar has a long and illustrious history dating from the 1950s when it was initially used as a room where fishermen stowed their nets and subsequently as a spot where they were offered refreshment to Pescatori after a long day at sea.

Il Pellicano Hotel: “An Italian classic, yet fresh as a popsicle, Il Pellicano continues to convince with a well-judged mix of retro glamour, glorious seafront location, and choreographed service. The staff are terrific, the barman is a cocktail whizz, and the food superb.” Conde Nast Traveller

Il Gambero Rosso, Porto Ercole: Excellent spaghetti with bottarga, fair caprese, nice desserts…Location quiet and with a very good view on the harbour, service friendly

Convento dei Passionisti

The old Convent of the Order of the Passionist Fathers was built in 1733 by San Paolo della Croce di Ovada. It is located high in the hills of Monte Argentario between Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano facing the Orbetello lagoon and the mainland. The Convent has a wonderful setting being surrounded by hundreds of hectares of natural woodland with no other houses in sight.

Island of Giglio

The beautiful island of Giglio is connected to the mainland by a regular ferry service from Santo Stefano that takes one hour. Alternatively, and comes highly recommended, consider renting a skippered boat for the day from Porto Ercole’s modern marina called the Cala Galera or from Porto Ercole’s harbour. The island of Giglio stands exactly in front of the Monte Argentario peninsula. It is famous, amongst other things, for the picturesque village of Giglio Porto and the wonderful clarity of its water, which is on a par with the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. Hence it is very much a mecca, during the summer months, of both those who enjoy diving and swimming
