Enchanting medieval hilltop town of Capalbio

Capalbio: An enchanting medieval town

Located about 45 kilometres southeast of Grosseto, the enchanting, medieval, hilltop town of Capalbio is the most southern town of Tuscany and borders with Lazio region. In the past, Capalbio was artistically important and called “Little Athens”. It is located a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea and Monte Argentario. The town is perfectly preserved and enclosed by walls that you can climb for spectacular views. The Aldobrandeschi family owned Capalbio in the medieval period and their fortress can be seen to this day in the historic centre of the town.

Capalbio Today

From the heights of a hill, the medieval hilltop town of Capalbio looks down towards the coast. Along with Argentario, it is one of the most inspiring holiday destinations of the whole of the southern Tuscan Maremma.

The small town has maintained all the characteristics of its medieval heritage. Capalbio’s streets are steep and follow the original medieval plan.

The town is surrounded by fortified walls. Inside there is the “Rocca”, an L-shaped building with a tower and closed courtyard dating to the 15th century.

The view from Capalbio’s “Rocca” is magnificent. We strongly recommend a walk along the ancient “bastioni” (ramparts) which surround the city. The view towards the coast at sunset is breathtaking.

Follow this evening passegiata, we recommend cocktails and dinner in one of our favourite local restaurants Il Frantoio.

Conde Nast Traveller says…

The medieval town of Capalbio, with its ancient crenelated walls and Renaissance frescoes, is worth a visit on its own. In summer, it is the sandy stretch of coast—over eight miles long — which is the main draw.
